Russia. Winter crops had enough soil moisture almost everywhere

In October, warmer-than-usual weather dominated the European part of Russia, as well as in the Southern and North Caucasian federal districts. The average daily air temperature was 2–5°C above normal or near normal. During the warmest period (October 7–19), air temperature peaked at 14…17°C, even at 20…22°C in the south. Active growth of winter crops was seen at the time. The lowest air temperature was registered at 2…8°C; minor air and ground-surface frost events (down to -1°…-4°C) locally occurred.

Most areas saw rain on October 1-10 (15–30 mm over this period, locally up to 40–45 mm+ in the north). Winter crops had enough soil moisture almost everywhere. Their condition is mostly good, being fair in part of the fields. Soil moisture supply in winter crops only remained insufficient, locally poor, in some areas that had received low precipitation rates. Sprouts of winter crops are sparse in single fields.

Farmers were completing the harvest of late grains and sunflower and, in the south, the planting of winter grains for the 2019 harvest, reports UkrAgroConsult.

It became much cooler on October 26-31 (0…+3°C in the daytime, down to -3…-1°C in the north and east of the territory). Winter grains stopped growing. Some northern areas got covered with snow on October 28. Night air temperature dropped to -11…-9°C in some federal districts on October 31, and the topsoil freeze has begun. The lowest soil temperature at the 3-cm depth equaled -6…-2°C.
