Ukraine. Winter wheat planting is more than 90% complete

GRAINS. Last week’s weather was favorable for harvesting late grains and planting winter crops. As of October 16, 2018, late grains had already been harvested from a 5% larger area than by October 17, 2017. Farmers accelerated corn harvest as well: it was 26% ahead of last year as of the reporting date, reports UkrAgroConsult.

The harvest of buckwheat and millet does lag last year (36% and 10%, respectively).

The planting of winter crops for grain is drawing to an end. It was 6% ahead of 2017 as of October 16.

 

OILCROPS. According to the Ag Ministry of Ukraine, sunseed had been harvested from 5437.8 Th ha by October 16, i.e. from 90% of its projected area of 6056.1 Th ha. The harvest is 5% ahead of 2017. The crop amounted to 12058.3 KMT with an average sunseed yield of 2.22 MT/ha (up 14.4% from 2017). By the same date a year ago, farmers harvested 10066 KMT of sunseed from 5177 Th ha with an average yield of 1.94 MT/ha.

Soybeans had been harvested from 1306.5 Th ha by the reporting date (76% of their projected area of 1709.2 Th ha). Their harvest is now 6% behind last year. Farmers combined 3303.9 KMT of soybeans with an average yield of 2.53 MT/ha (+37.5% from 2017). A year ago, 2561 KMT was harvested from 1389 Th ha with an average yield of 1.84 MT/ha.

According to current reports, the planted area of winter rape is already as large as 1002.7 Th ha. This is 113% of the projected 888 Th ha and 21% more than a year ago (830 Th ha).
