Bulgaria enhancing its position as a sunflower oil exporter

Bulgarian sunseed production has been following an upward trend since three years ago. Apart from an expanding planted area, this time period saw a rise in yields. According to preliminary results of the 2017/18 season, the two factors combined brought the sunseed crop to a record over 2057 KMT. Sunflower plantings in Bulgaria increased to an all-time high of 911 Th ha, while yield reached a near maximum of 2.29 MT/ha, reports UkrAgroConsult.

In the 2017/18 season, the rise in sunseed supply not only enhanced Bulgaria’s export potential but also resulted in higher domestic crushing. Correspondingly, sunflower oil exports reached a record level.

The EU still accounts for a lion’s share in Bulgarian sunflower seed exports. European countries absorb just 56% of sunflower oil exports from Bulgaria.

Concerning the 2018/19 season, the planted area of sunflower shrank down 18.8% from last season, but a record yield made it possible to harvest a heavier crop than expected.

UkrAgroConsult’s analysts believe Bulgaria will continue stepping up sunflower seed crushing with further increasing of sunflower oil exports.
