Air temperatures in winter crop growing areas in southeastern Kazakhstan were 1-6˚С below normal on February 1-10. Precipitation rates were largely below normal as well. Intense thaws seen in the southern regions during 1-6 days could have adversely affected winter hardiness of underdeveloped winter wheat crops.
In the south and southeast of the country, the lowest soil temperature at the depth of winter wheat’s tillering node varied from 0˚С to 5˚С below zero, reports UkrAgroConsult.
According to viability tests made on January 20, frost had killed up to 14% of winter wheat in Almaty region and 2% to 7% in Jambyl region, depending on the district. Winter wheat crops in Turkestan region had not been damaged.
Winter crops in West Kazakhstan region are covered with 21 to 50 cm of snow that is favorable for their survival.
